What does "there was a problem recording your payment, please try again" error message mean when applying a Trust Payment to an Invoice?

Answer:

There are several reasons why this error may be generated. One possible issue is insufficient funds in the Trust Account. Check that the Matter or Contact level has enough money to pay for the invoice, or do not have a negative balance. 

If you are trying to apply funds to a multi-matter bill using trust funds, the funds may be at a Matter Level and cannot be applied to all the Matters on the bill. Moving the funds to the contact level should resolve this.
