Why Do Collected Amounts Differ On Fee Allocation Report and Originating Attorney Revenue Report?

Question:

  • Why Do Collected Amounts Differ On Fee Allocation Report and Originating Attorney Revenue Report?

Environment:

  • Clio Manage

Additional Information:

  • n/a

Answer:

The reason the Collected Time and Expenses may differ is on the Fee Allocation Report and Originating Attorney Revenue Report due to how these reports handle partial payments applied into bills. The Fee Allocation proportionally weights the payments distribution across all line items for time entries and expenses, while the Fee Allocation Report applies payment chronologically based on the dates of the time and expense entries (first in, first out).

For example, if there was a bill with two line items totalling $1000. The bill includes a time entry for $500 with a date of 01/01/2021 and an expense entry, also for $500 on 01/02/2021. If a payment of $500 was applied to this bill, the Fee Allocation Report would report the time and expenses to have both collected $250. The Originating Attorney Report would report the time collected was $500 and the expenses are $0 because the date of the time entry was first.
