Clio has a great flexible rate system to allow you to capture your time easily.
For an example of the rate hierarchy in action, click HERE.
To get started, you will set your User Default Rate. The User Default Rate is a Clio-wide rate that will be linked to your name and will be used for all time entries, unless it is overridden by a Client or Matter rate, or Activity Category rate. For detailed instructions on setting up your User Default Rate, click HERE. Once you've set it up, when you enter in time you will see your User Default Rate noted in the time screen.
Activity Categories allow you to capture frequently performed events with the associated hourly rate or flat fee. The benefit of Activity Categories are that you can have consistent language for time entries across your firm (if you share them) and additionally the text of an Activity Category populates into your time entry. This saves time when you are frequently performing the same tasks. Additionally, you are able to share Activity Categories across your Firm, to specific groups, or keep them just for yourself. For instructions on creating Activity Categories, click HERE. Once you've set them up you will be able to quickly use them throughout Clio to capture time.
Note that Activity Categories with a flat rate will override all other rates.
You can assign a rate to a Client for yourself, for another user, for everyone or for a group. This feature allows you to easily remember and attach client-specific rates to your time entries. For more information, click HERE.
You can assign a rate to a Matter for yourself, for another user, for everyone or for a group. This feature allows you to easily remember and attach matter-specific rates to your time entries. For more information, click HERE.
You can create a Flat Fee Rate to use on Matters. This feature automatically creates a time entry and bill for the flat fee and tracks your time at a $0.00/hr rate. For more information on creating Flat Fee Matters, click HERE.
