Data Migrations

Our Data Migrations team can assist in bringing over information from another practice management program to Clio so that you don’t have to manually add all of the information to your Clio account.

Note: The exact nature of what data we can get depends on what can be exported from your previous software as well as the quality of that data set.

What Can Be Migrated?

There are three criteria that determine which data sets can be migrated to Clio:

  1. What can be imported into Clio? Our importing tools allow us to import:
    • Contacts
    • Matters
    • Calendars
    • Tasks
    • Unbilled Time Entries & Expenses
  2. What can be exported from your current practice management program?  This depends entirely on what program you currently use - we can’t import any data that can’t be exported from the original source in a csv format.

    Note: Want to find out what can be migrated to Clio from another program? Use the search bar above and ask "What can be migrated from [program name] to Clio?"

  3. What is the quality of the data set? In order to successfully migrate your information into Clio, we need to ensure that the data set is consistently formatted, well organized, sufficiently backed up, and stored securely. If you are not certain, it is recommended that you consult with your Clio representative before proceeding.

What Can’t Be Migrated?

  • Accounting and Financial History including:
    • Outstanding Accounts Receivable Balances
    • Bills and Trust Requests (historical)
    • Bill Payments and Trust Payments
    • Billable Rates (e.g. User Rate, Client Rate, Matter Rate)
  • Documents
  • Reports
  • User Permissions

What is a Data Migration?

Typically, a Data Migration entails the following steps:

  1. Consultation
  2. Export
  3. Data Processing
  4. Import


You’ll speak with a member of our team to discuss what your Data Migration will look like - including what can be exported from your current practice management software, any limitations in the exported data, timelines for Data Processing, and what to expect once that data has been imported into Clio. 

Data Export

Our team can help you to export the data from your previous practice management program so that it can be processed into a form that can be imported into Clio.

We can also provide some instructions on how to export your information for some popular programs. If you export the information yourself, it will eliminate the need for an export appointment and will likely speed up the migration process.

Data Processing

Our experts will convert your data exports into a format that can be imported into Clio.  Depending on the size and complexity of the data set, the time required to process the data can vary. A member of our team will be in regular contact throughout the Migration process to make sure that we’re setting and meeting reasonable expectations.

Data Import

After the data is processed, we’ll work with you to import the data to your Clio account.

Once the import has been completed, you will have 3 business days to review the data in your account to assess its accuracy and let us know if any corrections need to be made. If you modify the imported data in your account in the interim, data may be lost if the import needs to be reverted.
