What is a migration?

A migration is a session between you and our migration team.  The migration team will assist in bringing over your information from another practice management program to Clio.  We can bring over various information depending on the program you currently use (see below for more information).

How can I get assistance exporting my data?

Your account representative will be able to prepare you for a data migration; you can either email or call them on their extension. If you're unsure who your account rep is, please contact support at 1-888-858-2546, and we will help you get in touch with them.

Can I do a migration on my own?

Yes!  If you are comfortable with migrations and data processing, often you can export the information yourself, eliminating the requirement for an appointment. We can provide some instructions on how to export your information for some popular programs; you may have to deviate slightly from the instructions depending on the version of the program you are exporting from. Most exports require processing and re-formatting in order to "fit" your data into Clio. Some select programs will allow exports to import directly to Clio. Please contact your account representative to inquire further on how to move forward with a self-export. 

How long does it take to get the information migrated into my Clio account?

At the time you request a migration, a consultation call between you and our migrations team will be required. There may be a short wait for them to get back to you. After the consultation, the timeline from there will depend on certain variables: the program you are using and whether you require an appointment for exporting the data via remote session, or  if you are able to export your own data. Appointments are booked on a first-come-first-serve basis, and the wait-time can fluctuate depending on the volume of requests at that time. If your data requires processing, the timeline for re-formatting the information is generally around 5 business days.

What about bringing over my contacts and calendar to Clio?

To assist our users we have created tools to allow you to synchronize your calendar and contact information with Microsoft Outlook or Google Mail.  Unlike a migration these tools create a 2 way synchronization with Clio, thus any changes made in one piece of software is automatically reflected in the other.  Also of note, that while many legacy practice management solutions cannot export their data directly to Clio many have the ability to synchronize directly with Outlook. In turn you can export your calendar and contact data as follows [Existing software] » MS Outlook » Clio.  This option is generally quicker as a synchronization can generally be setup in as little as 15 minutes. What can I bring over to Clio from my Practice Management Program?

The information available for migrating will greatly rely on what your current practice management program provides in their exports. We are able to import Contacts, Matters, Calendars, Tasks, Activities and Notes to Clio; whether these are available for export from your original program depends on that program itself. The consultation call with the migration team will allow you some more insight on what we have experienced with migrating data from your current system. 

What can I not bring over to Clio from my Practice Management Program?

What we cannot bring over again greatly relies on your current system; the consultation with the migrations team will allow more information on this.

We are unable to import historical accounting information and invoices.  We generally suggest choosing a date you wish to move forward (you may have to work with the migrations team to arrange a timeline), and bring your balances over to your Clio account once the migration team has successfully migrated everything they can. Users can bring over A/R and bank account balances and the support team, or your account representative can assist if you need help with this. If that's required, you'll need to begin working with them after you've completed the migration of the majority of your data.

Your documents cannot be imported as part of the migration process.  However users can bulk upload files and folders to Clio from their computer.  Users may also wish to review the integrations we offer with Dropbox and Box for their cloud file storage needs.  Learn more about the integrations here, or contact our support team, or your account representative for more assistance.
