Clio Payments: Set Up

Clio Payments is available to subscribers of our Loyalty, Boutique, and Elite plans.

You can upgrade to the Boutique or Elite plan in the app, or if you’re interested in seeing how this feature can work for your law firm feel free to contact us by email or give us a call at 1-888-858-2546 (choose option #1).

Currently Clio Payments is only available for credit card transactions into domestic U.S. bank accounts, and only in U.S. dollars. Also, please ensure you have a full, valid U.S. address entered in Clio's Account and Payment info settings.

Note: Only an account administrator can sign up for a new Clio Payments account or connect LawPay to Clio Payments.

About Clio Payments

Clio Payments gives you the ability to dramatically improve your cash flow position and reduce debt by removing the time delay between when you issue an invoice and receive payment.

Credit card processing capabilities allow for secure payments to be made without leaving Clio. No need to visit an external service, interact with a physical device, or manage an integration.  In addition, clients can pay bills anywhere they have internet access.

This, coupled with new email-based invoicing capabilities, allows you to send an email directly from Clio, with a PDF copy of the bill and a secure payment link. The secure link offers your clients the ability to pay the bill on their own. 

Signing up for Clio Payments - without an Existing LawPay Account 

Before setting up Clio Payments, ensure that you have set up your account(s) within Clio.

To set up Clio Payments without an existing LawPay account, go to your Clio Settings panel and click "Online Payments" in the Clio Settings column.

In the "Choose your Payment Account Provider" dropdown field, select "Clio Payments". You will then be provided with additional options. Click the "Sign up for Clio Payments" button.

You will now be provided with the Clio Payments application form. 

Please note:

  • All fields in the application are required.
  • None of the information entered into the form is saved on Clio's servers.
  • Once the application is completed, it will take 24-48 hours to be approved or declined by LawPay.

The first thing that you will see is a summary of the steps and info that you will need to complete the application.

Note: You can connect Clio to a trust account. Utilizing Clio's Trust Request tool you can also pay into the Trust Account. For more information, review the Working with Trust Requests article.

Step 4 - review costs and complete the application:

Click the "Apply" button to submit your application.

Once the application has been submitted, you will see the green "successfully submitted" confirmation banner. You will then have to wait until you are contacted by LawPay before you can start recording credit card payments - about 24 to 48 hours.

Signing up for Clio Payments - with an Existing LawPay Account

Before setting up Clio Payments, ensure that you have set up your account(s) within Clio.

To set up Clio payments using your existing LawPay account, go to your Clio Settings panel and click "Online Payments" in the Clio Settings column.

In the "Choose your Payment Account Provider" dropdown field, select "Clio Payments". You will then be provided with additional options. Click the "Sign in using LawPay" button.

You will automatically be redirected to LawPay where you will be required to log in if you are not already. Once you log in to LawPay, you will be presented with an "Authorize" button that you must click to enable Clio Payments.  

After clicking the "Authorize" button, you will be redirected to Clio where you will be required to map an operating account in Clio to the live operating account in LawPay. To do so, you will click on the "Add a connection" button:

 

Next, in the Clio and LawPay mapping fields, you will select the Clio and LawPay accounts that should be connected.

Finally, you will click the "Update Online Payment Account" button at the bottom of the page to immediately start recording credit card payments.

Now, when you view your bills in Awaiting Payment, you will see the "Credit Card Payment" quick link associated with each bill.

FAQ 

Will credit card payment processing be available on Clio’s mobile apps?

Not at present, as the mobile apps do not currently allow for payments to bills.  However, the addition of this function to the web app is the foundation for later implementation on the mobile version.  For the time being, you and your clients will be able to use this feature through a mobile friendly page on the web app, loaded in your device’s browser. 

What is the turnaround time on payment from the Clio Payment process?

Deposits generally take 24 to 48 hours to credit to your bank account. Weekends and banking holidays are not counted toward deposit time frames.

What credit cards do the Clio payment system accept?

VISA, MasterCard, Discover, Diner’s Club, JCB, and American Express.

How much does this cost?

Each successful transaction run on a credit card will incur a fee of $0.20, plus a percentage of the transactions value (All Major Cards 1.95% and specialty cards / Amex 2.95%).  For example, a $100 payment from VISA will result in a transaction fee of $2.15 being deducted from your operating account at the end of the month. (Card brand network fees may apply).

If you sign up for additional services through LawPay, those services may incur additional fees.

What happens when someone pays a bill from a secure link or Clio Connect?

A card charged by the client through a secure link or the Clio Connect access portal will be processed in the same manner as if it was charged by the lawyer in Clio. The additional action of a notification will be added to Clio’s firm feed to make you aware a charge was processed (and can be viewed in the dashboard).

Is there a notification when a credit card payment is made?

Yes. When the credit card payment has been successfully authorized, a notification email is sent to all users with the "Billing" permission.

How will I be billed?

Processing fees are deducted from the operating account associated with Clio Payments; the same account you accept payment into. Therefore, if you receive a payment by credit card, the full amount reaches the destination account unaltered. This deduction occurs at the end of the month.
