How to Manually Update a Matter Number

Objective:

  • Updating the Matter scheme for a single Matter only 
  • Edit a Matter name
  • Change a Matter 
  • Rename a Matter

Environment:

  • Clio Manage

Additional Information:

  • You can only edit the matter number if you have Admin permissions
  • Warning: DO NOT select the two checkboxes on the left-hand side, as this option will update all your Matters. This action is irreversible.

  • If you would like to update the Matter name and a Matter Number for a single Matter, please click here for instructions

Procedure:

  1. Click on Settings
  2. Select Firm Preferences
  3. Ensure you are on the Matter Numbering tab (if you do not see this tab, that means that you do not have Admin permissions and need to have your permissions changed or have the Admin edit Matter numbering)
  4. Please take note of the current Matter title sequence. The recommendation is to take a screenshot of the current page. 
  5. Select the Manual for each Matter template from the drop-down on the left Select Template field 
  6. Click Update Settings in the lower right-hand corner. DO NOT select the two checkboxes on the left-hand side, as this option will update all your Matters. 
  7. Navigate to the Matter that needs to be edited
  8. Select Edit 
  9. Update the field "Matter number" with the new name of your Matter. 
  10. Select Save Matter. The Matter is updated with the new name. Let's update your Matter Numbering setting back to the previous scheme. 
  11. Click on Settings
  12. Select Firm Preferences
  13. Select Matter Numbering
  14. Select the appropriate fields from the "Customized with additional fields" drop-down and selecting Add
  15. Once the Scheme reflects the old sequence select Update Settings
