How Does Clio Determine the Number of a Newly Created Matter?

Objective:

  • What number will Clio use next when I make a new Matter?
  • Does Clio automatically generate the Matter Number?

Environment:

  • Clio Manage

Additional Information:

For more on Matter numbering templates, see here.

Answer:

The answer varies, depending on how you've configured your Matter numbering template:

  • If your firm uses Matter Number (Firm-wide), Clio will look for the highest Matter Number currently in use, then uses the next-highest number.
  • If your firm uses Matter Number (Per Client), Clio will look for the highest Matter Number currently used by the new Matter's Client, then uses the next-highest number.
  • If your firm uses Matter Number (Per Year), Clio will look for the highest Matter Number currently used with an Open Date in the current year, then uses the next-highest number.
