How do I Remove the Number from my Matter Names?

Objective:

  • Remove field or component from Matter Number

Environment:

  • Clio Manage

Additional Information:

Note: These changes to Matter Numbering are permanent and will impact all of your Matters, including any that were migrated into Clio using manually assigned numbers; only proceed if you are positive that you do not need to refer to these numbers. 

  • Matter Numbering setting are firm-wide

Procedure:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select Firm Preferences
  3. Click on Matter Numbering
  4. In the darker gray box on the right-hand side of the page, click on the x beside the matter numberyearly matter number, or client matter number
  5. Remove any relevant separators (commas, dots, and or dashes), by clicking of the x alongside (if applicable)
    • E.g., if your scheme was 00001-Client Name, and you just want to use the Client Name, you would remove both the "matter number" and the hyphen
  6. Check the box to Update all existing matters to reflect new numbering scheme
  7. Click Update Settings
