How Do I Create Separate Bills for Time and Expenses?

Objective:

  • Invoice services and costs separately
  • Generate one Bill for just legal fees and another Bill for reimbursable expenses

Environment:

  • Clio Manage

Procedure:

Generate a Bill that includes all entries: 

  1. Go to Bills
  2. Select New Bills
  3. Check the box to the left of any Matter or Client you wish to bill
    • You can use the Filter button at the top-right to quickly locate the Matter/Client or restrict by date range
  4. Click Generate at the top of the list
  5. Make any necessary selections in relation to Issue date, Due date, Detail level, Combining Matters, Tax, and Notifications
  6. Click Generate bills

Edit the Bill to remove Services (this will become your Expense Bill):

  1. Go to Bills
  2. Select Draft
  3. Locate the Bill
    • You can use the Filters button at the top-right to search by Matter/Client
  4. Select Edit 
  5. Select the Services button
  6. Check off the box to the left of Actions
  7. Select Remove 
  8. Click Save invoice 

Generate a separate Bill for the remaining entries (there should be only Services left):

  1. Go to Bills
  2. Select Billable Clients
  3. Check the box to the left of any Matter or Client you wish to bill
    • You can use the Filter button at the top-right to quickly locate the Matter/Client or restrict by date range
  4. Click Generate at the top of the list
  5. Make any necessary selections in relation to Issue date, Due date, Detail level, Combining Matters, Tax, and Notifications
  6. Click Generate bills
