What is Full Text Search?
Clio's Full Text Search (FTS) functionality enables you to search through document contents in addition to titles and authors. In many respects, Clio’s full text search feature works similar to the search feature available on your Windows File Explorer search, or Mac Finder search experience.

Frequently Asked Questions:
How Does FTS Work?
You can start using the FTS feature by typing the keyword(s) you want to search in the Global Search Bar available at the top of all Clio pages in your browser.
If matches are found, click on the “Document Content” search category to view the search results, and preview the matching text.
On the “Documents Content” search category page, you can also use the filters to further narrow your search and find the right document.
Is FTS a user-level feature, or account wide?
This feature is account wide, and users will be able to search documents for which they have permissions, across the account.
Will FTS be available on Clio’s mobile app?
At present, FTS is not available on the Clio mobile app. We will evaluate adding the feature to the mobile app at a later date.
Which document types will be supported by FTS?
FTS supports common text-based file types will such as pdf, doc, docx, and msg and a few others.
Which Clio plans will have access to FTS?
FTS is accessible to customers in EMEA and UK, customers can view their eligibility on our pricing page.
Will search results respect the user permissions of their documents?
Yes, search users will only see documents in their results that they have permission to access.
Are there any documents whose contents won’t be searchable?
Password protected and encrypted files won’t be searchable.
Is OCR (recognition of text characters contained in images) supported by FTS? If so, what would that functionality entail?
OCR is not currently supported by FTS but will be considered for future feature versions if there is sufficient demand.
Does FTS support documents in all languages?
FTS currently supports the English language. Searches in/for languages other than English may work in some cases but might not return desired results.
Will third-party integration (such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, Netdocs) docs be searchable?
Third party integrations (such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, Netdocs) will not be searchable using Clio’s FTS, but many of these products offer their own search functionality through their own apps/sites.
What is the logic behind how the FTS results are displayed?
If your search term contains multiple words (e.g. John Doe), FTS will return documents that contain all those words, irrespective of the fact if those words appear together or not in the document content. However, if you enclose the search term within double quotation “” marks (e.g. “John Doe”), FTS will return only the documents where both the words appear together.
