Why do Pipes in my Activities cause errors with LEDES invoices?

Objective:

  • Can I use the vertical line character in my time entries?
  • LEDES pipe symbol error
  • Vertical bar in Activities
  • Vertical slash in LEDES billing

Environment:

  • Clio Manage

Additional Information:

Complete information about the LEDES 1998B standard can be found at https://ledes.org/ledes-98b-format/

Cause:

As defined in the LEDES 1998B billing standard, "LEDES 1998B is  an ASCII, pipe delimited format". Because the pipe character (|) is used to indicate the end of one field and the start of another, using the pipe character in data that will be exported in the LEDES 1998B format will cause programs that read LEDES 1998B formatted bills to misread the ends and starts of fields, breaking the format.

It is recommended that you do not use the pipe character in your Activity Descriptions, Matter Numbers, User names, or elsewhere in Clio if you intend to use LEDES format Bills.
