How Do I Manually Change a Matter Number?

Objective:

  • Manual Matter Number change
  • Change Matter Number for just one Matter
  • Update Matter Number just once

Environment:

  • Clio Manage

Additional Information:

You are able to edit Matter names individually while maintaining your Matter Numbering scheme for all other Matters.

Note: Once you have changed your existing Matter Number scheme to Manual, you will not be able to revert back to your previous scheme. PLEASE MAKE NOTE OF YOUR EXISTING MATTER NUMBERING SCHEME - this will allow you to set it up as it was when you need to switch out of manual Matter Numbering

Procedure:

In Settings:

  1. Navigate to Settings
  2. Click on Firm Preferences
  3. Click Matter Numbering
  4. Under Select template, select Manual for each matter
  5. Click on Update Settings

In the Matter:

  1. Navigate to the specific Matter
  2. Select Edit matter
  3. Enter in the Matter number
  4. Save matter

Once you've done this, you would need to go and reset the Matter Numbering Scheme as it was previous or a new scheme as needed:

  1. Navigate back to Settings
  2. Click on Firm Preferences
  3. Under Select template, select Custom
  4. Customize with additional fields as needed - clicking the "Add" button and adding separators in the grey box
  5. Click on Update Settings

Note: Once you update Matter numbers manually, you cannot update all existing matters to reflect a new numbering scheme in the future as it will override that initial manual Matter numbering update.
