Unable to Import CSV File, "Argument Error: Too Many Open Files"

Issue:

  • Unable to import CSV file, error occurs
  • Unable to import Tasks from CSV
  • Argument Error: Too many open files @ rb_sysopen

How Do I Bulk Import Tasks into Clio?

Cause:

The CSV file may contain too many entries which may be causing an error.

The CSV file may contain a field with an unknown or incorrect character which may be causing an error.

Resolution:

Divide the CSV file into two individual files and import each into Clio

  1. Open the CSV file in Excel
  2. Click on the number 1 on the left of the first row (subject, due_date, complete, description, matter)
  3. Copy the first row (On Windows: CTRL + C, On Mac: Command + C)
  4. Open a new document in Excel (File > New)
  5. Select cell 1 A and Paste (On Windows: CTRL + P, On Mac: Command + P)
  6. Navigate back to the CSV file
  7. Select row 2 and highlight half the rows and Copy
  8. Navigate to the new document
  9. Select cell 2 A and Paste (On Windows: CTRL + V, On Mac: Command + V)
  10. In Excel, select File > Save As
  11. Enter a new File Name
  12. Select File Format Comma Separated Values (.csv)
  13. Click Save
  14. Repeat steps 1-6
  15. Copy the other half of the data
  16. Repeat steps 7-12

 

 Import the file by following the following steps:

  1. Open Clio's Import page:
    • For North American accounts, click here
    • For European accounts, click here
  2. Click Add
  3. Under Import select Tasks from CSV
  4. In the User dropdown menu, select the Clio User who will be responsible for the imported entries
  5. Click Choose File
  6. Select the first CSV file you created
  7. Click Upload File 
  8. Repeat steps 2-7 using the second CSV file
