Why Do I Have Duplicate Matter Numbers?

Objective:

  • Why are there two matters with the same Matter Number?

Environment:

  • Clio Manage

Additional Information:

  • n/a

Procedure:

It would be possible for two matters to share the same matter number. The matter numbers are generated in a sequential order, so if the matter with a specific matter number is deleted, it would no longer be registered as an existing matter in the system and would be applied to the next matter that is created.

For example, Matter number #1 is created in error, then deleted. Following this, a second matter is created which would not be designated as Matter #1 as the original matter with the #1 was deleted. If the original Matter with #1 is recovered, you will now see there are 2 matters with the same matter number.

To correct this, you can change the matter number by following the instructions from this article: How to override a matter number
