Why does the Spacing of Merge Fields change when I generate a PDF Document Template?

Question:

  • Why is the Spacing off when I generate a PDF Document from a Template in Grow?
  • Why do the Merge Fields Populate in the Wrong Area when Generating a PDF Document Template?

Environment:

  • Clio Grow

Additional Information:

Answer:

Merge fields within PDF Document templates in Grow do not know that they should be in line with text items. This means that even though the spacing is configured correctly when creating the template, we cannot guarantee the data will be reflected in the correct location when prepared. This is one of the main reasons we suggest using the Text Editor templates instead, as it treats the merge fields as text, not just fields placed on top of a PDF.

As a workaround, if you still prefer using a PDF template over Text Editor, you can manually drag the data field to the correct location after generating the document.
