FAQ - Client Portal Updates + Clio Connect, Secure Messages Name Changes

What’s changing?

On October 22, Clio is excited to launch a new client portal, Clio for Clients. Clio for Clients is client-friendly portal for easy and secure communication that clients can access from any device. With the launch of Clio for Clients, Clio Connect will be renamed to Clio for Co-Counsel. We understand that you may have clients using Clio Connect today, which is why there will be no change to Clio Connect’s functionality.

In addition, the Secure Messages tab in the Communications section of Clio Manage will be renamed as Internal Messages. 

Why is the Clio Connect name changing?

This change is to make way for our enhanced client portal: Clio for Clients. Today, Clio Connect serves as both a client portal and co-counsel portal but will soon be designated as a co-counsel portal. Since client and co-counsel needs differ, having separate solutions enables us to focus on the distinct needs of those using it.

As Clio for Co-Counsel will be geared towards attorney and co-counsel collaboration, we recommend transitioning new clients and matters to Clio for Clients.

Can I still use Clio for Co-Counsel (previously Clio Connect) with my clients?

Yes. We understand that you may have clients using Clio Connect today, which is why there was no change to the functionality, the Clio for Co-Counsel renaming is not obvious from the clients perspective, and you can continue to use Clio for Co-Counsel the exact same way as before. But as mentioned, we recommend transitioning new clients and matters to Clio for Clients to provide the best experience possible for your clients. Learn how Clio for Clients works here

If I have clients using Clio for Co-Counsel (previously Clio Connect) will they be made aware of the name change?

No, the new name does not appear for clients or co-counsel that are using Clio for Co-Counsel. All emails that go to clients/co-counsel from Clio for Co-Counsel do not reference the product by name. As well, like it was as Clio Connect, there is no Clio for Co-Counsel logo in the product (it is branded with your firm’s name/logo).

Can I share bills with my clients through Clio for Clients?

Not yet. We will be extending this functionality to Clio for Clients in the near future as well as supporting payments. For those who share bills with current clients, you can continue to do so through Clio for Co-Counsel (previously Clio Connect). As mentioned above, the client will not be aware of the naming change and will still have access to all previously shared material.

What’s the difference between Clio for Co-Counsel (previously Clio Connect) and Clio for Clients?

Clio for Clients was built with the client experience in mind and has a number of features that make client collaboration easier and more accessible:

  • Clio for Clients can be accessed from a web browser or mobile device.
  • Clients can access the portal easily using a secure link from their email. They don’t need to set up an account or password. If using the mobile application, clients can set up a privacy lock through Face ID or fingerprint.
  • When using the mobile app, clients can scan documents, which are saved to Clio Manage as a properly cropped PDF.

Clio for Co-Counsel has a number of features that enable co-counsel collaboration, including:

  • The ability to share matters, case details, internal notes, documents, and tasks. 
  • Co-counsel can log billable time entries against matters shared with them.

Currently, Clio for Clients does not support the sharing of bills, calendar events, or tasks with clients, but they are in consideration for future enhancements. If you would like to see these or other features added to Clio for Clients, please share this feedback with the support team using the contact details at the bottom of the page.

Can I start using Clio for Clients with a client that currently uses Clio for Co-Counsel?

Yes. After October 22 you can begin using Clio for Clients with your clients at any point, even if they are currently using or previously used Clio for Co-Counsel. Existing clients can benefit from the improved experience of Clio for Clients, particularly if they prefer using a mobile device. One thing to be aware of is that messages and documents shared via Clio for Co-Counsel will not automatically be in Clio for Clients. Though, documents and folders previously shared via Clio for Co-Counsel can be shared to Clio for Clients. 

How do I start using Clio for Clients?

Once Clio for Clients has been made available (after October 22) follow these steps to get started:

  1. Navigate to Communications
  2. Click New client portal
  3. Select a matter
  4. You and the client will automatically populate as participants. You can add or remove participants under Select participants. Once the client portal is created you will be able to add additional participants if needed by navigating to the client portal and clicking Add next to Participants.
  5. Click Create client portal
  6. Now that your client portal is created, you can send a message or a document. The first message or document you send to a client on a matter will trigger a Clio for Clients invite email to that client.
    • To send a message, type your message where it says Type a message then hit Send.
    • To send a document from within the client portal, click Upload file.
    • You can also share or unshare documents to Clio for Clients from the documents section and in the matter’s documents section. Click the dropdown next to the document you wish to share, and select Share to client portal.
