Get Started With Clio Drive for Mac

Clio Drive for Mac is a virtual file management drive that syncs between your computer and Clio Manage. It gives you the benefit of creating, accessing, and collaborating on files right from your desktop. With Clio Drive for Mac, you can:

    • Find, access, and edit files and folders right from your desktop.
    • Get unlimited document storage that is always backed up.
    • Collaborate across your firm to add and edit files to avoid duplication and overwrites.
    • Improve file organization and document accuracy across your firm.
    • Increase efficiency in creating and editing files when document changes are mirrored in Clio Manage.

 


Install Clio Drive for Mac

Clio Drive for Mac is accessible from the Clio desktop app. You can install Clio Drive and the Clio desktop app directly from your Clio Manage account. 

  1. In Clio Manage, go to Documents.
  2. Click Desktop access in the top right, and select Install for Mac.

    Tip: Click this link to go directly to your Documents page.

  3. Follow the on-screen Mac prompts to install Clio Drive.
  4. After installation is complete, open the Clio desktop app from your Dock or from the application icon in your menu bar.
      • The icon in the menu bar is located in the top right of your Mac's desktop screen.
  5. Select Drive and toggle the button to the on position.
      • Clio Drive is turned on if the toggle button is green and if Drive Status is Connected.
  6. Access Clio Drive on your desktop by opening Finder.
  7. In the sidebar under Locations select either localhost or Network.
  8. Click Clio Drive.
      • You will see your Contacts as folders. Click a Contact to find a Matter. Click a Matter to find previously filed attachments, emails, and documents.

Connect to Clio Drive

You will need to connect to Clio Drive each time your computer is restarted, shut down and turned back on, or if your connection is unstable. To connect to Clio Drive:

  1. Open the Clio desktop app.
  2. Check that Drive is turned on and that Drive Status is Connected.
  3. Open Finder.
  4. Look for Clio Drive under localhost or Network.

If you cannot find Clio Drive in Finder or if you disconnected or ejected Clio Drive, re-connect Clio Drive through the Clio desktop app.

  1. Open the Clio desktop app.
  2. Toggle Drive off and then on.

Clio Drive will re-connect and be visible in Finder.

Note: Clio Drive is in active sync with your documents in Clio Manage. This means that you will need an internet connection to access your documents.


Create a New Document

With Clio Drive you can create a new document directly on your desktop and save it to a Contact or Matter folder. You can also continue to create a document from a template in Clio Manage. When created, the document can be found in both Clio Drive and Clio Manage.

Create Directly in Clio Drive

On your Mac, add a new document to Clio Drive by using Spotlight to open your document creation application of choice from within a Clio Drive folder.

  1. In Clio Drive find the folder you want the new document to live.
  2. Use Finder's Spotlight to search for and open a document creation application.
      • Your Mac has a built-in document creation application called TextEdit, but you can also search for any other application, such as Microsoft Word.
  3. Click New Document.
  4. Create your document, go to your desktop's menu bar, and then choose File > Save.
  5. If you need to change the save location, use the dropdown to search for the new folder, and then click Save.

Create in a Document Creation Application

On your Mac, add a new document to Clio Drive by opening a blank document in a document creation application and then save the document to a folder in Clio Drive.

  1. Open your document creation application of choice.
      • Your Mac has a built-in document creation application called TextEdit, but you can also search for any other application, such as Microsoft Word.
  2. Create your document, go to your desktop's menu bar, and then choose File > Save As.
  3. In Clio Drive find the folder you want the new document to live, and then click Save.

Create in Clio Manage

You can also make changes in Clio Manage that will be replicated in Clio Drive. In Clio Manage you can upload files and folders, create new folders, and create new documents from existing templates.

To create a new document from an existing template in Clio Manage:

  1. Go to Documents.
  2. Select New > Create a new document from template.
  3. Choose your Document template, change the File name, and check or uncheck Create a PDF document and Create a Word document, and then click Create.

Open and Edit a Document

You can open and edit a document in either Clio Drive or from within Clio Manage using the Clio desktop app. Any edits made to an open document in Clio Drive will be mirrored in Clio Manage when saved, which makes it easier to collaborate across your firm. 

To open and edit a document in Clio Drive:

  1. Find the document in Clio Drive.
  2. Double-click the document to open it or right-click the document and select Open.
      • Your document will open in the document creation application that you created it in. 
  3. After making your edits, go to your desktop's menu bar, and then choose File > Save.

Tip: In Finder, switch to Gallery view to see a preview of all documents in a single folder.

To open and edit a document from within Clio Manage:

  1. Find the document in Clio Manage.
  2. Click the blue arrow beside the document you want to open.
  3. Click Open Clio Desktop if a prompt appears.
      • To always open documents in Clio desktop after clicking the blue arrow, check the box next to Always allow app.clio.com to open links of this type in the associated app.
  4. After making your edits, go to your desktop's menu bar, and then choose FileSave.

Bulk File Upload

With Clio Drive's bulk file upload feature, you can upload large quantities of documents or large file sizes in the background from Clio Drive to Clio Manage. When you upload files to Clio Drive, all your files will be available instantly in Clio Drive. Availability in Clio Manage varies depending on broadband speeds and file size. To use the bulk file upload feature:

  1. Open Finder and look for Clio Drive.
  2. In Clio Drive find the folder you want the files to live.
  3. Copy the files you want to upload to Clio Drive and paste them in the folder of your choice. Alternatively, you can also drag and drop the files.

    Tip: Use keyboard shortcuts to easily move all your files. Click command + A to select all files. Click command + C to copy all files. Click command + V to paste all files. 

  4. Open the Clio desktop app and select the Drive tab.
  5. Beside Pending Upload Queue click View queue.
      • The blue upward arrow means that the file is in queue and the upload process has not started.
      • The grey hourglass means that an upload is in progress.
      • The green checkmark means that the upload is complete.
  6. Access your files in Clio Manage under Documents when all the files in the queue are marked with a green checkmark.

Note: A file can only be removed or deleted from the queue if it is marked with the grey hourglass. When you see the green checkmark, the file will need to be deleted from either Clio Drive or Clio Manage.

Move a Document to a Different Folder

You can easily move a document from one folder to another in Clio Drive. The changes will be reflected in Clio Manage. Keep in mind that when you move a document to a new folder, it will no longer exist in the previous folder. To move a document to another folder:

  1. Find the document in Clio Drive.
  2. Left-click and drag the document.
  3. Hover over the new folder, and then drop or release the document into the new folder.

Tip: If you prefer, you can open two Finder windows and then drag and drop the document from one window to the other.


Duplicate a Document 

In Clio Drive when a document is copied from one folder to another, or when it is duplicated in the same folder, the change is also reflected in Clio Manage. The duplicated file will have the same file name with the addition of "copy" at the end of the file name in both Clio Drive and Clio Manage. To duplicate a document:

  1. Find the document in Clio Drive.
  2. Right-click the document and select Copy, or use the keyboard shortcut command + C.
  3. In Clio Drive find the folder where you want the duplicated document to live.
  4. Right-click in the space and select Paste Item, or use the keyboard shortcut command + V.
  5. Refresh the Documents page in Clio Manage.

Delete and Recover a Document

When a document is deleted in Clio Drive, it is also deleted from Clio Manage. Similarly, when a document is deleted in Clio Manage, it is also deleted from Clio Drive. To delete a document in Clio Drive:

  1. Find the document in Clio Drive.
  2. Right-click the document and select Move to Trash, or use the keyboard shortcut command + delete.
  3. Select Delete when asked if you are sure you want to delete the document.

You cannot undo a delete action or recover a deleted document in Clio Drive, but you can recover a deleted document in Clio Manage. In Clio Manage a deleted document goes into a "hidden" state. To reveal and restore the document:

  1. Go to Documents.
  2. Under Filters check Show trashed files and then click Apply filters.
  3. Find the trashed document you want to recover and click Restore.

Refresh the page to see the recovered document in Clio Manage. In Clio Drive, you may need to wait a few seconds or leave the folder and go back in before the document reappears.

Note: A file can only be recovered within 30 days of deletion.


Temporarily Turn Off Clio Drive

If you need to temporarily turn off Clio Drive, you can do so from the Clio desktop app.

  1. Open the Clio desktop app.
  2. Under Drive, toggle the green button off. Clio Drive should disconnect in Finder. 
  3. If Clio Drive does not disconnect, go to Finder, look for Clio Drive, and click Disconnect or select the eject icon.

Uninstall Clio Drive and Clio desktop

To uninstall Clio Drive and Clio desktop, start by quitting the Clio desktop app.

  1. Open the Clio desktop app and select Drive.
  2. Click Settings (the gear icon) and choose Quit.

You can now uninstall Clio Drive and the Clio desktop app.

  1. Go to Finder Applications.
  2. Right-click Clio desktop and click Move to Trash or select Clio desktop, go to your desktop's menu bar, and then choose File > Move to Trash.
  3. Go to your computer's Trash, right-click Trash, and choose Empty Trash.

Tip: If you cannot find Clio desktop in Applications, search for the app in your Mac's desktop Spotlight search. Press and hold the command key while double-clicking Clio desktop.
